SpaceDC partners with Alibaba Cloud for smooth migrations to the cloud

SpaceDC and Alibaba Cloud bring a new service Express Connect to Southeast Asia.

Alibaba Cloud is a robust solution available in 200+ countries with over 3 million customers. It continues to grow from strength to strength. With their third availability zone going live in Indonesia the company is cementing its performance and reliability in Southeast Asia.

SpaceDC is proud to partner with Alibaba Cloud and offer it to our customer base in Southeast Asia. We look forward to growing together and helping support the launch of their new product Express Connect.

Express Connect is a cloud service solution that integrates the high reliability and performance offered by dedicated physical connections. A direct connection allows SpaceDC to bypass the Internet service provider (ISP) to keep the network stable and secure. We do this by establishing a physical connection between our on-premises data center and an access point of Alibaba Cloud. This provides a more secure and faster network connection with lower latency.

Rolls-Royce supplies power solutions for SpaceDC’s first Indonesian green focused data center facility

  • Rolls-Royce delivered 3 MTU gas and diesel systems for SpaceDC data centre in Jakarta
  • MTU gensets are specifically designed for efficiency and hot and humid conditions
  • Common goal: Lowering the environmental impact of data centers

SpaceDC officially launched its new ID01 25.45MW data centre campus with Rolls-Royce technology on 4 November 2020. It is the first green focused data centre in Indonesia. With innovative design and infrastructure SpaceDC enables a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.3, which is changing the industry’s approach to carbon footprint and ensures uptime for the users. Three MTU gas and diesel systems from Rolls-Royce with the latest exhaust aftertreatment technology provide efficient and clean base load and emergency power as well as cooling.

“There is growing demand for local data centres in Southeast Asia, even more since the Covid-19 crisis”, says Darren Hawkins, CEO of SpaceDC. “With the trend of decarbonization new concepts of power supply for data centres are at the forefront.” SpaceDC is a data centre provider who aims to lower the environmental impact of data centres. “This company philosophy fits very well with Rolls-Royce’s goal of continuously enhancing the eco-friendliness of our drive and energy systems and bringing them closer to CO2 neutrality,” explains Andreas Görtz, Vice President Power Generation at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

For the JAK2 facility in Jakarta, Rolls-Royce supplied three containerized gas and diesel systems.

The diesel systems, which secure the power supply of the data centre, comprise two MTU 20V4000 DS3300 gensets in a 40 ft container with SCR systems to reduce emissions.

“Reliable backup power is the lifeblood for any data centre – and it is absolutely fundamental in creating a world class facility,” said Darren Hawkins. “In designing our JAK2 data centre, we selected Rolls-Royce, with its MTU products, as our partner because they provide the best in market technology and power efficiency for this data centre, which is aligned with our vision of meeting international standards as part of the overall value proposition to our customers in the region and beyond.”

A 20-cylinder MTU Series 4000L64 FNER gas genset in a 40ft container is installed as CHP (Combined Heat and Power) application with a total efficiency of above 90%. The system will provide baseload electricity and cooling via an absorption chiller utilising the exhaust gas heat to provide cooling. The MTU gas systems offer best in class power density and have been designed specifically to withstand hot and humid conditions. This is especially crucial for the facility in Jakarta where the climate is tropical almost year-round. The MTU power solutions offer an extended Time Between Overhaul (TBO) of 84,000 hours, requiring less maintenance and overhaul intervals for maximum productivity and reliability.

“Deploying generators in a tropical environment like Indonesia comes with a unique set of challenges, especially for a data centre environment where uptime is absolutely critical. We’re proud that our Series 4000 generator sets will help SpaceDC meet the special demands of the location and ensure the highest levels of reliability for their customers,” said Andreas Görtz.

“Working with SpaceDC, we’ve seen great synergy in developing complete power generation solutions that are market-leading in terms of efficiency and reliability. And we are proud that they chose us as a partner to support them with our sustainability service and backup power”, said Waluyanto Sukajat, Acting Managing Director, PT. MTU Indonesia

SpaceDC becomes the first OCP ready facility and colo solution provider in APAC

7th July 2020 – The Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) announced today that Singapore-based data center provider SpaceDC Pte Ltd has achieved OCP Ready™ certification for their new data center in Jakarta, Indonesia. This is the first data center in Asia to receive this OCP certification and demonstrates the growing awareness of creating highly efficient facilities designed for the new wave of open infrastructure deployments.

SpaceDC’s Jakarta facility has met guidelines created by the OCP Data Center Facility Project Team, and serves as a reference for data center operators and tenants who want to understand the fundamental facility requirements to deploy this gear into their IT space. Facilities that meet these guidelines and approved by the OCP Data Center Facilities Project receive the certification as an OCP Ready™ facility.

Along with the facility, SpaceDC Pte Ltd has achieved colo solution provider status, which is a specific designation for members who are part of the OCP reseller ecosystem. OCP colo solution providers must exhibit strong technical, service and support capabilities to enable scalable deployments of OCP infrastructure.

SpaceDC is committed to lowering the environmental impact of their data centers and they have taken great care in all areas of the data center design. From site selection to modular construction, the energy source that they’ll be using to power the facility and the recycling of waste heat, these are all aspects that will help SpaceDC achieve their mission.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the OCP community – the same community shared by tech giants such as Google and Facebook. As the first OCP colo solution provider in Asia, this certification certainly affirms SpaceDC’s mission of being an efficient, reliable, and scalable data center platform for businesses looking to expand in the region. By being OCP certified, we have distinguished ourselves as a brand whom our customers can depend on for world-class data center solutions,” said Darren Hawkins, CEO of SpaceDC.

“SpaceDC recognizes the capacity for OCP solutions to continue growing and evolving across Asia, resulting in a need for more facilities and operators who understand the needs of enterprise companies looking to adopt more open hardware designs. I would like to congratulate SpaceDC for becoming the first OCP Ready™ facility in Asia, which is an incredible achievement,” stated Steve Helvie, Vice President of Channel Development for the Open Compute Project Foundation.

“Throughout the process for JAK2 to be certified as OCP Ready™, their team has demonstrated a deep technical knowledge and understanding of what it means to create an optimised data center facility for hosting OCP IT gear. This new colo facility is a fantastic addition to the growing portfolio of OCP Ready™ data centers and will enable SpaceDC’s OCP customers to take full advantage of the TCO benefits of deploying OCP technology,” stated Mark Dansie, a key member of the OCP Data Center Facilities Project Team and leader of the OCP Ready™ program.

SpaceDC’s OCP Ready™ facility is now listed on the OCP Marketplace here.

About the Open Compute Project Foundation

The Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) was initiated in 2011 with a mission to apply the benefits of open source and open collaboration to hardware and rapidly increase the pace of innovation in, near and around the data center’s networking equipment, general purpose and GPU servers, storage devices and appliances, and scalable rack designs. OCP’s collaboration model is being applied beyond the data center, helping to advance the telecom industry & EDGE infrastructure.
